The Lines Company

The Lines Company is proud to be of service to over 18,000 customers keeping them connected to electricity throughout the King Country, Waitomo and Central Plateau.

The Lines Company network covers 13,700sq km and stretches from Otorohanga in the north to Mt Ruapehu in the south; from rugged black sand beaches in the west across to the quiet shores of Lake Taupo.

While most of The Lines Company’s customers are residential connections, the company also supplies electricity to major industrial businesses like the iron-sands mine at Taharoa and New Zealand’s largest lime quarry at Oparure.

The Lines Company’s head office is in Te Kuiti with operational depots in Taumarunui, Turangi, Ohakune, and Mangakino. The company employs over 150 staff – the majority of whom are based in the field to maintain the lines that carry electricity from New Zealand’s national grid to individual homes, businesses, farms, baches and schools that are spread right across this geographically diverse area.

To reach all of its customers The Lines Company Network has:

4500km of lines (longer than a return trip from Auckland to Sydney!)
35,000 power poles
5000+ transformers
30+ zone substations
14 repeater sites to carry voice and data signals
250 remote controlled switches
10 load control points

The Lines Company is 100% owned by the Waitomo Energy Services Customer Trust and was formed in April 1999 following the Government’s electricity industry reforms. The business operates in a regulated environment where revenue controlled by the Commerce Commission.
