Investigating how much Kiwis spend on their bills!
Before we jump into how you can save on your bills, we have to first gauge how much Kiwis are spending on broadband and power. This will help give you a sense of whether you are overpaying for your bills or not!
The team at NZ Compare recently conducted two polls on Neighbourly asking Kiwis how much they spend on broadband and power per month.
The results were surprising! Kiwis are spending way more than they should on their broadband bills and there’s still room for some Kiwis to save more on their power bills.
How much are Kiwis spending on broadband?
The first Neighbourly poll that was posted by NZ Compare asked Kiwis: How much is your monthly BROADBAND bill?
Voters could choose from three options:
- Under $75
- Between $75-$85
- Over $85
A whooping 1,532 people voted on the poll within a few days! A staggering 44.3% said they spend over $85 on their monthly broadband bill, while a further 27.8% spend between $75-$85. Only 28.4% spend less than $75 on their monthly broadband bill.
The majority of Kiwis surveyed spend more than $85 a month. A quick look on Broadband Compare will show you that you can get broadband deals that cost you well under $85 a month, with some as low as $60 a month. So it’s clear that a lot of Kiwis are spending way more than they should on their broadband plan!!

How much are Kiwis spending on power?
The team at NZ Compare followed up with a second poll on Neighbourly that asked Kiwis: How much is your monthly POWER bill?
Voters could choose from four options:
- Under $200
- Between $200-$300
- Between $300-$400
- Over $400
More than 1,000 people voted on this poll with the results showing 63.7% of people spend under $200 a month, 25.5% spend between $200-$300 a month, and 10.8% spend $300 or more.
The majority of respondents spent less than $200 a month. It’s great to see so many Kiwis are spending less on power and saving plenty of money. However, it’s likely these people are what we call ‘low users.’ Did you know low user daily charges are being phased out? So your bill will start to go up over the next couple of years without you changing a thing.
Also, there’s still a small number of Kiwis who spend $300 or more per month on their power according to the poll. Of course, high usage will impact the price of a power bill but we still think that these Kiwis who spend over $300 a month can find an alternative cheaper plan!
Top tips to save on power bills!
So, how can Kiwis who are spending a lot on their power bills save? Here are our top three recommendations!
1). Compare power plans!
Again, our number one recommendation is to compare power plans! All it takes is a few minutes out of your day to look on Power Compare and find a better new power plan. You’ll find a plan that is cheaper or better value AND one that suits your lifestyle better!
2). Are you a low user or a standard user?
Power plans are currently split into two options. You can choose a low use plan or a standard use plan. The right plan for you will depend on your usage. Currently, many people (including the majority who were polled) will likely be on a low use plan. However, low use plans are slowly being phased out which means that many users will have to start paying more each month. So, it’s important to check you are on the right plan for your home.
