Sustainable energy, often referred to as renewable energy, is typically one of the most discussed strategies that can combat climate change. In New Zealand, we get our energy from both renewable sources and non-renewable.

Wind Energy

Wind turbines generate electricity when the blades spin, turned around by the immense power of the wind. As Kiwis know, New Zealand is not shy when it comes to producing a lot of wind! More and more wind turbines are being installed in the windiest regions of the country to bring sustainable energy to homes and businesses across the country.
Hydro Energy
One of the largest sources of renewable energy globally hydropower works by harnessing the energy generated from water moving from a high point to a low point. It’s often generated through reservoirs and rivers. When the flowing or moving water runs through underwater turbines, these blades spin and generate electricity. Hydropower plants are typically found at dams. However, the drawback to this type of energy source is that the abundance of it can be impacted by rainfall and drought.
Geothermal Energy
Geothermal energy works by harnessing the power of the thermal heat from within the Earth’s crust. We can extract the heat by using geothermal reservoirs such as wells, typically capturing the steam and hot water that come to the surface. This geothermal fluid is pushed through turbines which generate electricity as they spin. The potential downside to this source of energy is that it can release unpleasant smells. So, while there is always availability for this energy source, the side effects need to be managed.
